The science is clear: according to the Crowther Lab study (ETH Zurich, Science 2019), there are 0.9 billion hectares of land available for global reforestation (excluding cities and agricultural land). This represents approximately 1 trillion trees, capable of capturing up to 205 gigatonnes of carbon — the equivalent of about 20 years of global emissions at the current rate. The Trillion Tree Campaign, launched in 2018 and supported by the UN, targets this goal. As of May 30, 2021, only 13.96 billion trees had been planted (1.4% of the target). At the current rate, it would take more than a century. Global coordination is lacking.
